Gujarati community
Leicester
East Midlands · LE1 – LE5
Largest UK Gujarati community. Around a third of Leicester residents identified as Indian-heritage in the 2021 Census, the largest such share of any UK city, and Gujarati-heritage residents are the biggest single group within that. The Census does not publish a separate Gujarati count, so the Gujarati figure is indicative rather than an exact Census output.
Wembley (Brent)
North West London · HA0 and HA9
Brent has one of the largest Gujarati populations in London. Ealing Road in Wembley is a Gujarati commercial spine equivalent to Belgrave Road in Leicester.
Harrow
North West London · HA1 – HA3
In the 2021 Census, 45% of Harrow residents identified as Asian or Asian British, and 29% as Indian, one of the highest Indian-heritage shares of any London borough. Harrow has a strong Gujarati professional community alongside a sizeable Sri Lankan Tamil community.
Manchester (Cheetham Hill and Rusholme)
North West · M8 and M14
Greater Manchester has one of the largest South Asian populations in England outside London. Gujarati and Punjabi communities cluster in Cheetham Hill, and the Wilmslow Road Curry Mile in Rusholme is one of the best-known South Asian restaurant strips in the UK.
Punjabi community
Southall (Ealing)
West London · UB1 – UB2
Southall is one of the best-known Punjabi Sikh centres in the UK, often called "Little Punjab", with the Broadway and South Road lined with South Asian retailers.
Birmingham (Handsworth and Soho Road)
West Midlands · B19 – B21
Handsworth and Soho Road are the historical heart of the UK Punjabi community in Birmingham, established from the 1950s onwards. The area around Soho Road has one of the highest concentrations of Asian-heritage residents in Birmingham.
Smethwick (Sandwell)
West Midlands · B66 – B67
In the 2021 Census, 11.5% of residents in Sandwell, the borough that includes Smethwick, identified as Sikh, one of the highest shares of any local authority in England. Smethwick is at the centre of that Punjabi Sikh community.
Slough
Berkshire · SL1 – SL3
In the 2021 Census, 47% of Slough residents identified as Asian or Asian British, with Pakistani and Indian-heritage residents the two largest groups, a far higher share than most towns in the South East.
Coventry (Foleshill and Stoney Stanton)
West Midlands · CV1 and CV6
In the 2021 Census, around 9% of Coventry residents identified as Indian, with a long-established Punjabi community concentrated north and east of the city centre around Foleshill and Stoney Stanton Road.
Wolverhampton (Bilston Road and Whitmore Reans)
West Midlands · WV1 – WV3
Wolverhampton, with neighbouring Bilston, has a large and long-established Punjabi Sikh community and a substantial Indian-heritage population.
Hounslow
West London · TW3 – TW4
In the 2021 Census, 37% of Hounslow residents identified as Asian or Asian British and 21% as Indian, a trading base distinct from neighbouring Southall. Heathrow nearby supports a large Punjabi-heritage private-hire and operator community.
Mixed South Asian community
East Ham (Newham)
East London · E6 – E12
Newham is one of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in England and Wales: in the 2021 Census, 42% of residents identified as Asian or Asian British, with Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani-heritage residents the largest groups. Green Street in East Ham is one of London's best-known South Asian retail strips, mixing Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali and Pakistani-heritage retailers.
Leeds (Harehills and Chapeltown)
Yorkshire · LS7 – LS9
Harehills is one of the most ethnically-diverse wards in Leeds. Strong mix of Punjabi Sikh, Pakistani-heritage and Bangladeshi-heritage communities.
Why this exists as editorial content
UK Indian-heritage SMB owners are well-served by their own community networks but poorly served by mainstream card-payment comparison content. The trade-specific cashflow shape (Asian gold jewellery, mithai festival surges, mandir donation kiosks, halal butcher low-margin high-volume) does not map cleanly onto generic "best card machine for restaurant" content. These pages cover the specifics.
